Welcome to Yonkers, New York
One of the defining regions of the area, Yonkers is the largest city in Westchester County with a population of 200,000 people. At 18.3 square miles, it is also the fourth largest city in the New York State.
Incorporated in 1872, Yonkers incorporates a variety of housing options in its 38 neighborhoods, with each area maintaining its own unique personality.
The city has earned a reputation for its cultural endeavors. Yonkers is home to the 112-year-old Yonkers Library, the Hudson River Museum, the Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site, the Sherwood House and the Yonkers Police Museum. The city is also home to the Yonkers Hudson Riverfest, an environmental and multi-cultural festival held annually at the Yonkers Recreational Pier and vicinity that attracts thousands.
Yonkers is also a recreational haven, with over 100 parks within the city limits. Baseball diamonds, soccer fields, skating rinks and other amenities are all available, maintained by the city’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. There are more options for those who like to spend their free time shopping -- the city offers 17 malls for your enjoyment. The city is a short distance from all three metropolitan airports. Westchester County Airport located just 20 minutes to the north. Yonkers’ four railroad stations are served by bus transit. Public transportation also connects with subways, bus and airport facilities in New York City and makes regular connections with New York City’s main railroad stations. Metro-North trains transport Yonkers residents to Grand Central Station (less than a half-hour) along the Hudson Line, and the MTA’s Harlem Line services the city’s residents via stations bordering the east side of Yonkers.
The Yonkers public school system consists of 29 elementary schools, five middle schools and seven high schools. The system includes more than 5,000 employees that service over 26,000 students.
